Priming on Virgin Hair

As a licensed cosmetologist using direct dyes, I'm looking for professional insights on a challenge.

So, my natural Level 8 dirty blonde roots resist direct dye uptake without bleaching, which I prefer to avoid for darker tones.

My experienced colleagues have suggested a method called priming, which is applying a low volume developer directly to the hair, then rinsing and drying before color application, to open the cuticle.

I'm curious if this is a recognized technique. Has anyone tried it, and what were your results?

Or do you have similar, low impact strategies for better direct dye saturation on virgin hair? Your insights are greatly appreciated.

I used that priming technique on a client who had really tough Level 8 roots. I applied a quick 10 volume developer, rinsed it out, dried the hair, and then used direct dye. It really helps to open up the cuticle without needing to bleach. I've also found success with clarifying shampoo before dyeing or applying a bit of heat while processing. These are great, low-impact alternatives.

Great tip! If you gently lift the color with a 10 vol developer and some heat, you can really amp up how well the direct dye absorbs, and it won't damage your hair. Plus starting off with a clarifying shampoo is a smart idea too
