School did not help at all

I've been pushing myself through school working harder than a fully charged robot, especially in the beginning... I asked tons of questions and tried to stay engaged, but often got vague or unhelpful answers. Now that Im finishing up, I feel like I've learned almost nothing... zero. No real experience with cutting or coloring, and I don't feel ready at all. I've read through the material, but I'm a visual learner, and it just hasn't clicked. I'm now looking at going back to my old job, feeling like I wasted millions. I'm planning to try a short barbering course next, but if it's anything like this experience, I don't know what I'll do. If anyone has advice or good resources, Im really in need of a lifeline right now.

you're not alone @abbysaffari some programs really just fail on the practical side. Forget 'wasted millions,' your feelings are valid!
For cutting and coloring, especially as a visual learner, school often isn't enough. The real learning happens through apprenticeships or mentorships in a busy salon or barbershop.
Seriously, look for places willing to take you on as an assistant or junior stylist where you can watch, learn, and practice hands-on every single day. That's your lifeline, not just another course!

I think everyone here can relate on some level haha, lol so totally get the frustration, trying a barbering course sounds like a smart move since it's usually more hands on and visual. Also, look for workshops or apprenticeships where you can actually cut and color under guidance

My cousing was in the exact same situation, spent all the money and time and ended up not knowing anything more than she did before. She ended up finding courses online, started following key people and in the end managed to get in as an assistant and did some work under guidance and mentorship

Thanks, that really hits home!! Ive definitely felt frustrated with how little hands-on practice some programs offer. Do you have any tips on how to find good salons or mentors who are open to taking on assistants or juniors?

Courses online sounds a bit more sensible.. and yeah DIY efforts i think is a good call too
